The Best RTL Engineer in the Room Was Completely Lost…

Why Understanding The Application Matters More Than Writing RTL....

Many engineering students believe that becoming a great RTL engineer is all about learning Verilog, SystemVerilog, state machines, FIFOs, and coding techniques.

Those skills are important. But during my career, I witnessed a situation that completely changed how I think about RTL engineering.

A colleague from IIT Delhi joined our team. He was technically strong and could write RTL code very well. Give him a specification and he could implement the required functionality efficiently.

One day, our manager started discussing the internals of a storage protocol during a technical meeting.

It was not about RTL coding.

It was not about synthesis or timing closure.

Instead, the discussion focused on:

-> Why the protocol was designed this way

-> How data moves through the storage system

-> Where performance bottlenecks occur

-> How customers use the product

-> Why certain architectural decisions were made

 

To my surprise, the colleague struggled to follow the discussion.

The issue was not RTL skills.

The issue was application understanding.

That is why the most successful RTL engineers are not necessarily the best coders.

They are the engineers who understand why the RTL exists in the first place.
